pages 109-110     Morgan Co., Ga.: 16 June 1823, Augustus Alden, master senior warden, & Gilbert Wilson, Junior, warden, officers of Madison Lodge No. 18 & their successors in office, with consent of the lodge of Free Masons, to Thomas Gowdey, all of afsd. co., for $1600, in afsd. co. in the town of Madison, part of Lot 16 where the masonic edifice now stands, 26 feet in front & back to street, adj. in front by the public square on one side & by street & on other by the house & lot recently used by Gowdey & Butler as a Storehouse. With reservation that the officers reserve from lot that part where the entry to the lodge rooms is which is 8 feet front & 24 feet back running the whole width of building with the lodge rooms on the second floor of building with the right on the part of Messrs. Randolph & Erwin to occupy the portion of the lot where their Shop is according to the original agreement between Randolph & Erwin & the Lodge & them to remove building erected there. It is agreed that the cornerstone of the edifice is to be kept sacred by Thomas & he will not remove or deface same or place obstructions in front so as to prevent the reading of the inscription. Thomas reserves the right of raising the ground in front of the building so as to protect the cellar from the washing of rains not injuring or defacing the cornerstone that the basement room of building shall not be applied to any use to impair the value of the parts reserved to the lodge. The lodge obliges not to use or transfer the reserved parts so that same may impair the value of the lower tenement. In the event of destruction of the edifice, the lodge reserves the right of erecting on the basement story of any building on part of lot where the Masonic edifice now stands for the purposes of the craft with the like reservations as above, in fee simple. /s/ Augustus Alden, W.M., Gilbert Wilson, J.W.
