Georgia Militia of Morgan Co. at suit of Joseph Reese against James Drummond, exor. of Edwin Drummund, decd. William B. Butler, constable of dist., seized property of the estate of Edwin Drummond: Peter an old man & his wife Betsey. Returned to sheriff. 3 May 1831, exposed to public sale in Morgan Co. & Joseph Hester was the highest bidder, for $278. Lewis Graves, sheriff, sold to Joseph Hester. /s/ Lewis Graves, shff. Test: John B. Walker, Isaac Walker, J.I.C. Recd. from William C. Dawson & Van Leonard $298 in full for Peter & Betsey. /s/ Joseph Hester. We ack. the money paid by us to Joseph Hester for Peter & his wife Betsey was money which belonged to Peter as Mr. James Drummond & Mr. Hester informs us. We consider Peter and his wife Betsey as free as the laws of the land will permit them to be & disavow anything further than a superending control of slaves.
