I am Mrs. Farmer. Michal was Davids
first wife in the bible.
I started doing genealogical
research in 1958 when I was twelve years old. All four of my grandparents
talked about their families and I wanted to understand who everyone was. My
genealogy began with notes in a Big Chief tablet. In 1958, my maternal
grandparents took me to the Natchez Pilgrimage. A docent at the Rosalie mentioned
that a painting hanging on the wall was of a Mrs. Sims. I asked my grandmother if
she thought Mrs. Sims might be related to my Sims family and the docent heard me.
The docent said they had a genealogy workbook for sale and I could find out if Mrs.
Sims was related. That workbook started me on a lifelong quest to prove my ancestors.
After exhausting all of the
information my grandparents had of their families, I wrote letters to the
oldest members of each of my families seeking information. They were all kind
and helpful. During the 1960s I exchanged genealogy with many first, second, and
third cousins of my grandparents and started doing courthouse research.
In 1972 I joined the Dallas
Genealogical Society and started doing research at the Dallas Public Library.
The seminars and workshops given by the Dallas Genealogical Society and the
National Genealogical Society have been a great education.
Every name, date, and fact in
a genealogy must have documentation. A family tree without documentation is
fiction.
