Dallas Morning News, 9 December 1913: John R. West, Pioneer and War Veteran Dies, Civil Engineer had lived in Dallas County, 68 years. John R. West, who has for sixty-eight years been a citizen of Dallas County, died at his residence, 4203 McKinney Avenue, at 7 o’clock last night following an illness of several weeks. Besides his widow, Mr. West is survived by one son John R. West, Jr. and one daughter, Miss Retta West. He is also survived by a sister, Mrs. Alice Floyd of Baird. Burial, Webb’s Chapel, Farmers Branch. Pallbearers: W. M. Winn, H. H. Winn, E. F. Winn, F. W. Winn, and E. W. Winn, nephews, and P. C. Smith. John R. West was born in Washington County, Tennessee, May 8, 1842, and came with his father, Robert J. West, to Dallas County in 1845 and settled near Farmers Branch. He served in Company C, 6th Texas Cavalry. He moved to Dallas in 1889 and was a civil engineer with his son – West and West. He married 3 September 1865 to Miss Emma W. Winn who survives him. He was a member of the Methodist church.[1016]
