He married 10 August 1919, Venus, Johnson County, Texas, to Mae Belle Shaw, born 14 May 1892, died 13 December 1971, Breckenridge, Stephens County, Texas. They are buried in Venus Memorial Park, Venus, Texas.
Mae Belle Shaw was the daughter of William Bateman Shaw and Martha Francis Elizabeth Vail. Mae Belle’s sister, Ethyl Shaw, married Lyle Martin’s brother, Charles Paul Martin. Lyle W. and Mae B. Martin lived in Breckenridge, Stephens County, Texas, in 1930.
Lyle Martin served in World War I. He enlisted 6 July 1917, the same day as his brother, Fred Martin. Lyle and Fred served in the same regiment, the 142nd Regiment, Machine Gun Battalion, 36th Division. They received their training at Camp Bowie, sailing with the division from Hoboken, New Jersey, 18 July 1918, and landing in Brest, France. Both participated in the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives. Pvt. Lyle Martin was wounded in the jaw, shoulder, side, and right leg by shrapnel in the St. Mihiel drive and was gassed twice in the Meuse-Argonne offensive. He received citations for conspicuous valor shown during activities in these battles. Lyle and Fred Martin were discharged the same day, 20 June 1919.
