    Mary Polk, wife of Thomas Jones Hardeman, was the aunt of James Knox Polk. At the time of Mary’s death, in 1835, James K. Polk was speaker of the United States House of Representatives during Andrew Jackson’s presidency. James K. Polk was governor of Tennessee, from 1839 to 1841, and was president of the United States of America, from 1845 to 1849.
    Mary Polk Hardeman’s brother was Samuel Polk, born 5 July 1772, died 5 November 1827, married 25 December 1794, to Jane Knox. They were parents of James Knox Polk, born 2 November 1795, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, died 15 June 1849, Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee.550
    Eliza DeWitt Hamilton Davis was the daughter of Green DeWitt, empressario of Texas and founder of DeWitt’s Texas Colony. Green DeWitt was born 12 February 1787, Lincoln County, Kentucky, died 18 May 1835, Monclava, Mexico, married 15 December 1808, St. Louis County, Missouri, to Sarah Seely, born 27 June 1789, died 25 November 1854, Gonzales, Texas. Green DeWitt and his family are included in the 1828 census of DeWitt’s Colony, Texas.551
    Thomas Jones Hardeman paid taxes in Williamson County, Tennessee, in 1810: J. Thos. Hardeman. He paid taxes in Williamson County, in 1813: J. Thos. Hardeman, and jointly: J. Thos. Hardeman and Bailey Hardeman.
    Thomas J. Hardeman served in the War of 1812. He was a captain at New Orleans. He was captured by the British and wounded in the head by a saber.

Returned to North Carolina for college, graduated Chapel Hill, 1818.
