    John Marr Hardeman lived in Hardeman County, Tennessee, in 1830.895 He paid taxes in Washington County, Texas, in 1837. He is included in the 1840 and 1850 censuses in Washington County, Texas.
    Texas land measures: a league of land was 4,428.4 acres or 5000 varas square or 2.63 miles square. A labor of land was 177.1 acres or 1000 varas square. One vara was 33 1/3 inches; 36 varas = 100 feet.
    On 23 September 1837 in Washington County, Texas, James B. Miller and Eliza A. Miller, sold to Algred Gee and Nancy C. Gee, a tract in Cole’s Settlement, part of a league granted to William Bridge as a colonist, and half of said league deeded to Eliza A. Andrews, alias Lessassier, being south half of league, having been deeded by Miller to Blackstone Hardeman and John M. Hardeman, 1250 acres, for $1800.896 On 27 March 1839 in Washington County, James B. Miller and wife, Eliza A. Miller, sold to John M. Hardeman, for $600, two tracts in Cole’s Settlement, part of a league granted to William Bridges as a colonist.897
    Certificate, Board of Land Commissioners for Washington County, Texas: It is hereby certified that Stephen R. Roberts, James W. Smith, and Jessee Bartlett, commissioners of said board, do certify that John M. Hardeman presented himself to us on 12 January 1838 and proved to our satisfaction that he is entitled under the constitution and laws of Texas to one league and one labor of land. That he was a citizen at the date of the declaration of Independence, that he is a married man and has remained in this county ever since.898
